| Crimes, sins and offenses. Man sins when he violates one of the prohibitions or refrains from upholding one of the laws or mitzvahs.
Sin pertains to all types of sins, both social and ritual, whether they are committed deliberately or inadvertently.
A misdemeanor is a type of sin that includes a deviation from the straight and narrow, and is manifested in an offense that is committed deliberately, and whose results are more serious than the results of a sin. Sometimes the offense is ritual, but generally this refers to an offense in the moral or social domain.
Crime – the initial meaning of the Hebrew word for crime is revolt. A crime is more serious than a misdemeanor, because it is a deliberate act against the law.
An offense is a violation of rules that were set by a social group – organization, state, religious group and the like. Such a breach of the rules can be committed by a single individual or by a group of individuals.
The rules of the society, which are detailed in a law, regulations or any other binding document, define what an offense is and generally define the punishment imposed on those who commit an offense.
An offense can be committed by commission – a legal violation, or by omission.
For example: In most cases, a person who shoots a gun and causes the death of another breaks the law. Conversely, a person who has the legal obligation to safeguard the wellbeing of a minor and refrains from supplying him with the medicine that he needs, is also committing an offense.
Failure to prevent a crime is another type of offense.
There are various degrees of sins and offenses, and the severity of the punishment is determined accordingly.
All human beings sin. Sins can be minor or serious.
Sin in Christianity:
Christians believe that sinners are punished in Hell while the righteous are rewarded with eternal life in Heaven. It is possible to mitigate the sins somewhat by prayer, acts of mortification, good deeds and charitable gifts to the Church. Christians believe that divine justice requires a punishment for every offense.
Sin in Islam:
Islam generally distinguishes between serious offenses and minor offenses. Serious offenses refers to offenses that the Koran warns about – idolatry, witchcraft, murder, rape and the like, whereas minor offenses refer to offenses that can be atoned for through prayer, fasting and the like.
Sin in Judaism:
In Judaism a sin is an offense against the mitzvoth. There is a distinction between offenses between man and a place – and God, and offenses between man and man. A request for forgiveness can bring about absolution for the sin.
Coping with Sin:
- Asking for forgiveness. We can ask ourselves for forgiveness, our friends and God.
- Personal confession
- Prayer – a prayer to ask for salvation. This prayer must be honest and genuine, out of an understanding that we have erred and sinned.
